    Bilateral Regional Meeting in Telavi

    On April 29-30, 2010 in Kakheti Region, Telavi Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN) organized Bilateral Regional Meeting. The meeting was organized in the framework of two regional transboundary projects Sustainable Land Management for Mitigating Land Degradation and Reducing Poverty in the South Caucasus Region and Gucci Backpack Replica Strengthening and Engagement of Rural Women in Natural Resources Management in the South Caucasus countries. The latter one is implemented by CENN with the financial support of the Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst /EED.

    The project Sustainable Land Management for Mitigating Land Degradation and Reducing Poverty in the South Caucasus Region is being implemented by REC Caucasus in partnership with CENN with the financial support of the European Union and covers the Khrami-Debeda and Alazani-Iori watersheds in the South Caucasus region.

    The national and local coordinators of both regional projects from Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as farmers from those villages of both countries where were organized IRMP (Integrated Resource Management Plan)2 Meetings in the framework of the Sustainable Land Management for Mitigating Land Degradation and Reducing Poverty in the South Caucasus Region project attended the bilateral meeting. Irakli Kobulia CENN IRMP specialist also participated in the meeting.

    The aim of the meeting was to present and discuss the meetings conducted by local coordinators of both countries in the framework of the Integrated Resource Management Bilateral Plans (IRMP) development process and their results, as well as together with the farmers of both countries discuss the problems existing in the land management sector of Armenia and Georgia revealed during these and other consultations meetings at local level.

    Nino Tevzadze, representative of CENN, National Coordinator of the Sustainable Land Management for Mitigating Land Degradation and Reducing Poverty in the South Caucasus Region project opened the meeting. She welcomed the attendees, introduced them with the aim and agenda of the meeting. In her welcome speech Ms. Tevzadze thanked the attendees of the meetings for participation in the meeting and stressed the importance of the bilateral regional meeting for the project since the meeting was dedicated to development of IRMPs www.apmostwatch.com that is one of the key output of the project that is orientated identified key land management related issues existing in target areas and ways of their solution.

    Later on the local coordinators of both projects of Armenia and Georgia presented the results of the IRMP meetings conducted by them at local level. During the presentations they talked about the process of organization the meetings as well as about the key outputs of the meetings. They presented the main problems existing in target areas; the main emphasis was made on land management related issues, the causes of these problems as well as ways of solution developed in close consultation with local stakeholders.

    The presentations were followed by active discussions on the presented issues.

    The second day of the meeting was dedicated to discussion the land management related problems existing at local level together with farmers of Azerbaijan and Georgia. Very interesting exercise was discussion of farmers’ vision of solution of land management related problems. Also. on those needs that framers of both countries have in this indirection.

    At the end of the meeting Nino Tevzadze once again thanked the attendees for participating in the bilateral meeting and informed them that specialists will work on finalization of the Bilateral Khrami-Debeda watershed Integrated Resource Management Plan in close consultation with local stakeholders. She stressed that they will have consultations with experts on development the document, especially during elaborating the intervention methods to reduce and mitigate land management related problems at local level. She also talked about those trainings that are planned in the framework of the project for local framers that invoked a great interest in farmers.
